A Troubling Question

Does making images expand our experience of the world, or does it limit it?  Do we see things in new ways when we photograph them, or do we diminish and contract them?

Susan Sontag raises the issue, in her book On Photography:
A way of certifying experience, taking photographs is also a way of refusing it -- by limiting experience to a search for the photogenic, by converting experience into an image, a souvenir [p.10].
