Washington Post Comments On Its Use of HDR Image

A post appeared in the Washington Post blog explaining and justifying its use of an HDR image that appeared on its front page a week ago.

I agree with its author, Michel du Cille, director of photography for the newspaper, that tonal range expansion is not image manipulation.  It's about expanding the information already in the image, not adding or removing information.

I'd like to add that a point I made in my original article yesterday, that HDR processing is being internalized into the latest digital cameras, was also made by other bloggers and commenters on the web. Once that happens, the controversy about "external manipulation" will essentially be settled.
